Council Leader joins Chamber group - 23/07/2010
Bradford Council’s Leader, Ian Greenwood, has joined the key policy-making body of Bradford Chamber of Commerce.
Councillor Greenwood, whose Labour Group took over the running of the local authority following the May elections, has been co-opted onto the Chamber Council, which meets each month to discuss key business issues in Bradford. Although the Council has been represented within Bradford Chamber for many years, it is believed to be the first time that the Leader has joined a standing group in this way. Both sides have welcomed the development as forging even closer links between business and politics.
The Chamber made the initial approach to Councillor Greenwood following a suggestion from within an earlier Chamber Council meeting, and discussions have already taken place between Chamber Chief Executive Sandy Needham and key local authority personnel, including Chief Executive Tony Reeves and, of course, the Leader himself. The Council’s Executive member for economy and regeneration, David Green, has also met with the Chamber, which is looking forward to working closer with the main decision-makers.
“Bradford Chamber and Bradford Council are two separate bodies but with some overlapping aims and objectives. We’ve always worked closely with the Council, but including the Leader on our main representative body in this way allows for a number of different things to happen: the man at the top will hear directly, on a regular basis, from the businesses about their ideas and concerns; it gives the latter the chance to work directly with or feed information to the Leader; it clarifies and demonstrates a willingness on both sides to work for the betterment of Bradford; and it adds to the channels of communication between the two organisations that can only be for the greater good,” said Chamber President Harold Robinson.
Councillor Greenwood added: “I’m pleased to be invited to join the group and look forward to working closely with the Chamber, which has a strong track record of helping the local business community. The Chamber is also happy to challenge the Council when it thinks we are doing something wrong, so I know that it won’t all be plain sailing in the meetings.”
Bradford Chamber Council meets monthly at its offices in Little Germany.
