Charity Information
The Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd was established as a charity in September 2000 by four families all with young children with Down syndrome. Membership now numbers over 200 families all of whom care for a child with Down syndrome and over 100 interested professionals from education and health. The majority of families are from the Bradford area but many are also in Leeds, Wakefield, Halifax, Huddersfield and beyond.
The group offers support, information and training in the specific learning needs of children with Down syndrome and aims to improve the children’s development and education and work towards a more inclusive society.
Support includes:
- Home visits to new families
- New parent support packs – made up of information we feel is relevant at this early stage
- An Early Development Group for children aged 10 months to 5 years and their parents – offering tailored learning and support in early language, numeracy and cognitive development. Four groups run fortnightly.
- Monthly Saturday sessions. Each month we deliver activity sessions for families – offering learning activities, play, time for parents to chat and, most months, the opportunity to meet a visiting professional
- Training courses in the specific learning needs of children with Down syndrome; open to both parents and professionals
- Coffee mornings, day trips in the summer, a monthly swim session –just for our families and weekly dance classes
- A library of books, resources and software
- A monthly newsletter that helps to keep members informed of our many developments and events we organise. It also offers support and information.
